Every summer, thousands of people head into Macclesfield town centre to enjoy the colourful 1261 Festival and Parade, one of the town’s biggest celebrations of community, creativity and local heritage.
The festival takes its name from the year 1261, when Macclesfield was granted its Town Charter by Prince Edward, who later became King Edward I. The charter gave Macclesfield important trading rights and helped establish it as one of the most significant market towns in the region. More than 760 years later, the town continues to celebrate this important moment in its history through the annual 1261 Festival.
Organised by Macclesfield Town Council, the festival was created to showcase everything that makes Macclesfield special. From its famous silk heritage and rich industrial past to its thriving arts scene, local businesses and strong community spirit, the event brings together residents, visitors, artists, performers and community groups for a day of free entertainment across the town centre.
One of the highlights of the festival is the spectacular 1261 Parade, which sees hundreds of participants take to the streets in themed costumes, accompanied by music, performances and giant creations produced by local schools, organisations and community groups. Each year the parade adopts a different theme, transforming the streets of Macclesfield into a vibrant celebration of imagination and creativity.
Alongside the parade, visitors can enjoy live music, walking tours, family activities, exhibitions, workshops, street entertainment, food and drink, and interactive experiences taking place throughout Market Place, Chestergate, Park Green and other locations across the town.
Today, the 1261 Festival has become much more than a history event. It is a celebration of modern Macclesfield, bringing together the town’s past, present and future while encouraging people to discover local attractions, support independent businesses and enjoy everything the town has to offer.
