What Is Macclesfield Museum on the Street?
Macclesfield Museum on the Street is a free, self-guided heritage trail that transforms Macclesfield town centre into an open-air museum.
Expected to officially launch in late July or early August, the new trail allows visitors to discover Macclesfield’s history while walking through the streets where many of its stories actually happened.
Created by Macclesfield Town Council and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, Museum on the Street features eight permanent information boards located around Macclesfield town centre.
The boards explore the town’s people, buildings, historic streets, industries, music and art. Each location tells its own individual story, so visitors can complete the whole trail in one day or discover the boards over several visits.
How Does Macclesfield Museum on the Street Work?
Each information board includes photographs and historical details about the surrounding area.
Visitors can also scan a QR code using a smartphone to access an accompanying YouTube feature. The stories can be listened to through a phone or followed using subtitles, helping to make the experience accessible and engaging.
The eight boards can be found around Chestergate, Castle Street, Churchill Way, Mill Street, Park Green and near Macclesfield railway station.
There is no required starting point, and the boards can be visited in any order.
Is Museum on the Street Free?
Yes, Macclesfield Museum on the Street is completely free, and visitors do not need to book in advance.
Families can also download maps, children’s questions and activity sheets to make the trail more interactive.
It is an ideal activity to combine with a shopping trip, lunch, a coffee with friends or a visit to Macclesfield’s Treacle Market.
