Discover Macclesfield Museum On The Street

Macclesfield museum on the street launches this Summer (official launch expected end of July/early August. Explore Macclesfield’s fascinating history with Macclesfield Museum on the Street, a free, self-guided heritage trail through the town centre.

The trail brings local history out of books and museum buildings and into the streets of Macclesfield. Visitors can discover stories about the town’s people, buildings, industries, music, art and historic streets while exploring the town centre at their own pace.

Created by Macclesfield Town Council and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the trail features eight permanent information boards positioned at important locations around Macclesfield.

Each board includes historic information, photographs and a QR code linking to a YouTube feature. Visitors can listen to each story on their phone or follow the subtitles while standing close to the location being described.

Where Are the Macclesfield Museum on the Street Boards?

There are eight Museum on the Street boards to discover across Macclesfield town centre.

You can complete the full trail during one visit or explore the locations over several trips. The boards do not need to be visited in a particular order, as each one tells a separate story about Macclesfield’s heritage.

Chestergate

Opposite Charles Roe House, near the upper end of the pedestrianised section of Chestergate.

Castle Street

On the corner of Castle Street, opposite Panadero Lounge.

Churchill Way

On the corner close to the Churchill Way car park.

Mill Street

On Mill Street, shortly before the junction with Queen Victoria Street.

Ian Curtis Mural

On Mill Street, next to the Ian Curtis mural.

Park Green – Wetherspoon

In the Park Green car park, close to the Wetherspoon pub.

Park Green – The Fountain

In the Park Green car park, close to The Fountain.

Macclesfield Train Station

In the car park opposite Macclesfield railway station.

Is Macclesfield Museum on the Street Free?

Yes. Macclesfield Museum on the Street is completely free to explore and no advance booking is required.

Visitors only need a smartphone to scan the QR codes and access the accompanying audio features. The trail is suitable for local residents, families, schools and visitors looking for interesting things to do in Macclesfield town centre.
