Macclesfield 2024 Heritage Open Day

Macclesfield Town Hall is throwing open its doors on Saturday 14th September 2024, 10:30am to 2:30pm, to welcome in visitors to celebrate the Macclesfield Heritage open day.

The Town Hall will be hosting the ‘Made in Macc’ craft market, a hobby and community-group fair, sharing information about the history of the building and our information booth will let you know about everything else on town-wide as part of Macclesfield Heritage Open Day!

Also open on the day:

King Edward Street Chapel, 11am – 3pm

A chance to visit one of Macclesfield’s oldest and most beautiful buildings dating back to 1690. Members of the community will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the Chapel, its rich history, or its present-day role as a place where people of all backgrounds and beliefs come together in a spirit of tolerance, spiritual curiosity and love. Copies of key historic documents will be available to view and light refreshments will be available (tea, coffee, herbal teas).

Christ Church, 11am – 3pm

Meet the costumed volunteers and learn about the iconic building as it approaches it’s 250th birthday.  Explore local history through the archives plus kids activities, lego and refreshments.,

St. Paul’s Church, 9:30am – 12:30pm

Come along to St Paul’s as they get ready to celebrate their 180th Birthday in October. Have a look around the church, find out information about the planned refurbishment and roof appeal and help to celebrate their 180th birthday. The Saturday cafe will be open serving FREE full English breakfasts, bacon/sausage butties, cereals and hot drinks.

The Silk Museum, 10am – 4pm

Pop into the Silk Museum to explore The Women’s Line exhibition. The Women’s Line is a snapshot of Macclesfield-resident women’s family trees presenting their female lines artistically through highly personal mixed media portraits and memories.

Additionally you’ll have the opportunity to visit the Wicked Women of Macclesfield exhibition and perhaps take part in the Wicked Women walking tour. This exhibition showcases some of the Wicked Women of Macclesfield whose stories have been in the large part forgotten or invisible. The women of Macclesfield made significant contributions to its industrial and municipal development, leaving great stories to tell. As part of this exhibition you can expect to be introduced to scolds, witches, rebels and more. The Blue Stocking Podcast have researched and produced this exhibition, with support from the New Macclesfield School of Art.

The companion-piece walking tour lasts approx 90 minutes and starts at Macclesfield Town Hall. The tour is free but booking is required – click here to secure your place. Tours set off at 10.00am, 12.00pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
