Bold colour, expressive brushwork and paintings that reward a closer look. SEASONS brings the work of Ian Rayer-Smith to Art in the Stables Gallery at Martha Rose Interiors, with an immersive exhibition combining art, sound and scent.
Manchester-based Rayer-Smith took an unusual route into painting. A visit to a California gallery prompted him to leave a career in business and pursue art, later studying fine art at the University of Salford. His paintings have since travelled to galleries in London, Munich, San Francisco and West Hollywood.
His work draws on the energy of Abstract Expressionism and the light, movement and composition of Renaissance painting. Rather than recreating a recognisable scene, he works instinctively, allowing emotion, memory and chance to shape what appears on the canvas. Music accompanies his studio days, and he describes painting as a continuing search rather than a process with a fixed answer.
That leaves plenty of room for your own response. Take your time with the colours and marks, notice what catches your eye and see what the work brings to mind. You do not need to be an art expert to enjoy looking.
SEASONS runs from 8 November 2026 until 31 January 2027 at The Old Stables, Brook Street, Macclesfield, SK11 7AA. Join the free opening event on Sunday 8 November, 11am–3pm. For visits after the opening, check viewing hours and admission arrangements with the venue.
