Macclesfield Canal

Macclesfield Canal runs between Marple and Hall Green, near Kidsgrove, UK. It passes through Bollington, Macclesfield and Congleton, stretching about 26 miles long with 13 locks.

It links the Peak Forest Canal with the Trent and Mersey Canal and forms part of the “Cheshire Ring”. The Macclesfield Canal was one of the last narrow canals to be built in Britain, opening on 9th November 1831.

Today the canal is part of the network owned and managed by the charity, the Canal & River Trust (CRT). The 26 mile long route is perfect for a quiet walk, run, cycle, canoeing or even the hiring of a long boat for the day, week or weekend.

The Macclesfield canal was the first canal in the world to receive a Green Flag Award.
